For 240 years the grand parade of human greed, love, cruelty, longing, and foolishness was captured in the Proceedings, the published record of trials that took place at the Old Bailey, the central criminal court, in London.

Now, powerful digital tools developed by an international team of researchers to search these trial reports and summaries have begun to offer new insights into the evolution of the justice system, the institution of marriage and changing morals.

The Old Bailey offers a unique window into the criminal justice system and, by extension, British culture. The free searchable online archive, oldbaileyonline.org, contains accounts of nearly 198,000 trials between 1674 and 1913. “It’s the largest body of accurately transcribed historical texts online,” said Tim Hitchcock, a historian at the University of Hertfordshire in England and part of the team. "All of human life is here."

When many people think of gaming, they automatically think of gaming consoles. And, sure, many households have at least one (if not all) of the three major gaming consoles available: the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii. But for a truly connected and immersive gaming experiences desktop PCs reign supreme. PC Gaming more scalable as laptops, and it is even easier to install the expansion packs for PC games consoles. The new 120 Hz screens announced a new chapter for 3D games and you can not get all the new games bells and whistles, unless you have a gaming PC of high power. That said, you do not necessarily need to buy the desktop the most expensive to play the most popular games.

Model issues
PC gaming used to be a humungous monster who took a lot of space around your desk. You can still buy one of these monoliths, especially if you are interested in a multi-graphics card configuration (more on that later). However, smaller mini-tower and small form factor PCs are certainly powerful enough to play all but the most strenuous games with higher screen resolutions. Small Form Factor PC is the benefit of a laptop if you are going to the social gaming session a friend's house or rent a room somewhere.

FreeApp is an online service that offers a simple concept. Pick all your favorite applications from the list of offered apps to create a custom installer that will install all those applications on the target system once executed. The idea is not new as there are other services like Ninite which offer a similar functionality.

FreeApp is on the other hand an easy to use service. All it takes is to pick the apps to install from a list of available ones on the start page of the service and to click the Get Installer button afterwards to download the application installer to the local computer system.

The service promises that all applications have been tested for viruses and spyware. They even inform the user about toolbars that are included in the installer.

Google surprised yesterday for the purchase of Motorola's Mobility. Even if Google does not need to buy anything new, the strategy of the company was a small mistake shopping thinner. The 12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola's mobility is a sensitive issue, with an almost negligible price to Google. Why? In regard to the patent rights of Motorola mass. This could be very valuable to Google, which faces patent litigation from rivals, as entered in the mobile operating system.

After a false start, Firefox 6 has been officially released.

Though many tech sites, including PCMag, published news of its release over the weekend, Mozilla had only made code available from its FTP servers, a standard practice leading up to a release. But in accordance with Mozilla's recently adopted rapid release schedule, version 6 debuts only 8 weeks after its predecessor and only includes whatever updates are ready for that schedule. Whereas in the past, a new full-number Firefox version meant almost a completely new browser, Mozilla's new approach means there's a lot less in the way of new features with each increase in version.

But that's not to say Firefox 6 brings nothing to the party. In fact, a look at its complete change log reveals a significant total of 1,300 changes and fixes. One that end users may notice include URL highlighting, which, like Internet Explorer 9 and Google Chrome, shows the domain name in darker font than the rest of a page's address. The other visual change, though not major, is in the "site identity block"—the area to the left of a Web pages address that indicates whether it's a secure. Mouse clicking on this shows if a page is encrypted, verified, who owns it, and who verified it.

Windows’ Safe Mode is a bare-bone version of the operating system that is often used for troubleshooting PC issues. It is available under all versions of Windows and can be started by tapping on the F8 key during startup of the operating system. It is for instance handy to uninstall software in Safe Mode that you cannot uninstall under the regular OS. Another area where Safe Mode shines is the removal of viruses and malware that has infested the OS.

Malicious software sometimes disables Safe Mode among other things to prevent an easy recovery of the system. That’s a problem if you do not want to reinstall or restore the operating system, or do not have the means to do that.

Windows Safe Mode Fixer is a straightforward application that can be used to repair the Safe Mode, so that it becomes accessible again.

The core issue that is keeping the majority of Windows users away from changing their theme is the complexity of the procedure. While it takes just a click to install basic new themes under Windows 7 that change the wallpaper, color scheme and maybe some sounds, it is not as easy to switch to a full theme.

Why? Because Microsoft has built-in protections into the operating system to prevent tampering with core operating system interfaces. Before it is even possible to start changing themes under Windows it is necessary to patch those system files.

This meant running one or multiple programs back in the days. To make matters worse, some programs were not compatible with 32-bit versions and some offered different program versions for that. Lots of confusion in this regard.
