Vector is our cross-platform, cross-site podcast where we talk about the technology that matters to all of us. In this episode, Don Melton, former Engineering Director of Internet Technologies at Apple, deep-dives into his non-browser-based passions: Blu-Ray, transcoding video, H.264, and managing massive amounts of media. Bottom line, if you want to get your videos onto your devices, and you're not afraid of command-lines or codecs, you're in for one hell of a ride. But, yeah: Warning: Contains extreme nerdery.

Through Glass: Feeling comfortable living in the future

Through Glass: Feeling comfortable living in the future

Android Central

Second in our new weekly series about living with Google Glass.

'Are those the Google Glasses things?'

If you buy Google Glass, get ready to field that question. Every day. Im not sure whats more surprising at this point the number of people who can properly identify Google Glass, or the number of people who have no problem asking me to confirm their suspicion. Interestingly, a decent number of people I come across have said How do you like Google Glass? Ive seen a few people with those before.

Whether theyre scared about breaking it or just shy enough to not inquire, few people have actually asked to try Glass on. In any case, the interaction always ends up being a positive one. Everyone asks a few simple questions about how it works, what I see and of course how much it costs usually asked with a sense of intrigue and wonder that you just dont see from normal people around consumer electronics today.

Android CentralAnd for every person who has the courage to ask about my fancy headgear, another 20 have given me an interesting look as I walk down the street here in Seattle, sit at a restaurant or order my caramel mocha at Starbucks. As my girlfriend and I walked through the Pike Place Market last weekend on a crowded afternoon, she turned to me after a while and said, Do you realize that every single person we walk by has stared at Google Glass? Well, no, I didnt think it was every person ...

After a couple weeks of walking around the city with Glass, understanding that Im now that guy, I can actually experience what its like to live in the future.

At least at this point, the future is a bit of a mixed bag.

Im doing my best to wear Glass any time I leave the house, and for me that involves a lot of walking and public transit in the city. My primary use of Glass at this point has boiled down to just a few key things. First up is effectively effortless picture and video capture. Look, tap, speak, capture its faster than anyone will be able to take out their phone for a picture, and the resulting images are great to boot. Two more taps or a voice command and the picture is posted on social media.

Android CentralNext is directions. Beyond the inherent location service issues associated with being in a city with tall buildings and questionable cell service, Glass will get you where you need to go walking, and you wont run into people on the sidewalk while you do it. Transit directions, while useful, could use a little work. You can get a route overview and full directions, but Glass still assumes you have a general understanding of the metro system step-by-step information including route numbers would be a good start. If I was in another city and had to get from A to B on public transit, the information provided in Google Maps on my phone would be drastically more helpful.

Unfortunately Im finding notifications to be rather hit-or-miss. Whether its out of necessity with battery life or not wanting to distract the user, you really dont get all of the notifications you want or need. Seeing Google+ comments, Twitter mentions, SMS and some Gmail messages is useful, but I use more than those to communicate and keep up with life throughout the day. (And for the uninitiated, new notifications on Glass don't actually turn on the display in front of your eye. You do get a sound, though.)

I dont see every email, I dont see Hangouts at all, I dont see Facebook Messenger or Foursquare. Much of this comes down to app support and settings for what apps are already there, hopefully fixed with the impending release of the GDK, but the notification system clearly has a long way to go. As someone whos used to having a Pebble notify me for anything I want, I feel like Glass is just sitting idle on my head when it should be feeding me information.

Nobody ever guaranteed that the future would be wholesale more convenient than the present, right?

Android Central

The upcoming release of the GDK has me excited about the possibilities of Glass in the very near future. Just taking a look at the apps released along with a "sneak peak" of the developmentkit shows the real power of what Glass can do if developers have the proper tools.Google Music on Glass has piqued my interest as well, to say the least.

As for now, I'll be trying to get comfortable living in the future.

Moto G up for preorder on Amazon today, ships Dec. 4

Moto G up for preorder on Amazon today, ships Dec. 4

Moto G

The new Moto G is one of the best values you can get in an Android smartphone and it's now available for preorder on Amazon. Pricing is exactly the same as from Motorola $199 for the 16GB mode, and $20 less for 8GB. Those prices don't come with those pesky two-year contracts, either.

This one's definitely worth taking a look at, folks. Here's how we put it recently in our full Moto G review:

Depending on your perspective, the Moto G can be seen as a ridiculously cheap phone considering its quality, or a ridiculously good phone for its price.

The phones start shipping Dec. 6.

KitKat HTC One

Yet another thing to be thankful for

HTC USA's Twitter account just gave word that unlocked and developer edition HTC One phones have a new update pushing out today. This OTA will bring KitKat and Sense 5.5 to the One, and sounds like a pretty good way to cap off a day of thanks.

We've seen a few of the changes with Sense 5.5 for the M7, but seeing KitKat in action on a Sense phone will be a first. Keep an eye out if you've a dev or unlocked model (or made your AT&T version into one), and be sure to share what you find when it happens.

Samsung unveils red and 'rose gold' Galaxy Note 3 in Argentina

Note 3Samsung Argentina has revealed two new color options for its oversized Galaxy Note 3 handset today "rose gold" and red bringing the total number of color variants up to five. The rose gold Note 3 is white, like the standard "classic white" version, but with bronze accents around its edges, buttons and camera. The red version is well, red.

There's no official indication as to when, or even if these new colors will spread outside of Argentina, but recent rumors from Samsung fansite SamMobile point to the red version launching internationally in the first week of 2014, followed two weeks later by the rose gold model.

FIFA app

FIFA that's the world governing body for soccer has released its own Android app, appropriately named "FIFA."

The app, which is free and available for devices running Android 2.3 and up, is a portal into the latest soccer news, from the upcoming World Cup next summer, to the European leages to the MLS here in the United States. As far as apps go, this one's pretty decent (though the font's a bit annoying), with the usual sort of design you'd expect from a news-type app. There's also a section for live matches, and you can get recaps on video on photo galleries as well.

We've got a few screen shots after the break.

NVIDIA Shield down to $249 with free case and games for Black Friday

NVIDIA Shield

$50 off the Shield itself, plus free case, Sonic 4 Episode 2 and Expendable: Rearmed

NVIDIA is getting in on the Black Friday action, offering its own Shield handheld gaming device for $249, down from the usual price of $299. And to sweeten the deal, the manufacturer is throwing in a free carry case, valued at $39.99, as well as two free games Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2 and Expendable: Rearmed.

Here's what our own Jerry Hildenbrand had to say about NVIDIA's Android-powered handheld in his review of the device:

"The NVIDIA Shield isn't going to appeal to a wide audience, but I don't think it was designed to do so. It's clear that NVIDIA had one thing in mind when the built the Shield, and that was to create a top-of-the-line gaming device that runs on the Android platform. NVIDIA certainly succeeded, and for anyone looking for the ultimate Android gaming system has found it in the Shield."

Interested? Hit the link below to get started. The deal comes with free shipping and runs until 11:59pm PST on Monday, Dec. 2.

Carphone Warehouse Cyber Monday Flash Sale
Lowest prices ever

In anticipation of the biggest online shopping day of the year, Carphone Warehouse is offering shoppers its lowest ever prices in an online only Flash Sale. Customers can snap up bargains on Samsung products, including a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7 bundle for just 33 a month on a 24 month contract. The iPhone 5s has also been reduced to Carphone Warehouses best price ever and the exclusive range of Kate Moss designed accessories has been slashed to half price.

All handsets available on Carphone Warehouse Flash Sale can be viewed here: http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/samsung-flash-sale

A Carphone Warehouse spokesperson said: Tablets are going to be a big seller this Cyber Monday, particularly now that there are so many different devices available that cover a range of budgets. Thats why weve specifically tailored our device bundle deals to offer people looking for value for money the chance to get their hands on a tablet for the family without any extra cost.

The UK market is beginning to catch on to Cyber Monday, traditionally a US trend, and the web is bustling with more offers and deals than ever before to entice customers in on this now crucial Christmas shopping day. Last year we saw a 22% increase in the number of UK customers logging on during Cyber Monday compared to the average online retail traffic for the rest of the fortnight and it is likely that this years uplift will be even more significant.

Theres also been a huge increase in the number of people using their smartphones for shopping. In fact, in recent weeks weve seen the number of orders placed through our mobile site increase by more than 200% compared to the same time last year. Were expecting Cyber Monday this year will mirror this further and that more customers than ever will be doing their Christmas shopping on the move via smartphones and tablets perhaps it should be renamed Mobile Monday.

All offers end 11:59PM Tuesday 3rd December

LG G2 KitKat update tipped for 'late Q1' arrival in Canada

LG G2 KitKat update tipped for 'late Q1' arrival in Canada

LG G2

While manufacturers like HTC, Sony and Motorola have been pretty forthcoming with their Android 4.4 KitKat update plans, we've yet to hear much out of LG, which launched its latest handsetthis fall on Android 4.2.2. But now LG Canada has given G2 owners their first inkling of when to expect that KitKat update.

MobileSyrup reports that it's been told by LG Canada rep Court Elliot that Canadian G2sshould receive the update around "late Q1" next year. The Android 4.4-based firmware will apparently be offered to all Canadian carriers at the same time, though this doesn't guarantee a concurrent rollout across all operators.

Late Q1 is a ways off, especially considering the likes of Motorola and HTC are slating updates for January, but at least it gives G2 owners a rough idea of what to expect. Of course there's also no guarantee that other countries' G2s will be held to this schedule, as things often get messy when carriers become involved.

Carrier offers 25 percent reduction in cost of buying out contract to get subscribers onto 'O2 Refresh' plans

O2 UK has announced a new promotion designed to tempt existing customers onto its O2 Refresh price plans, which decouplethe cost of customers' phones from their monthly service payment. Dubbed O2 Speed to Refresh, the new deal gives existing customers 25 percent off the cost of buying out the remainder of their contract if they upgrade to an O2 Refresh plan.

O2 Refresh is part of a growing trend which has seen some operators offering a clear distinction between the price of cellular service and the cost of payments towards the value of handsets. The plans mean customers' monthly bills are reduced after they've finished paying off their phone, and they can pay the full cost of the device up-front in exchange for lower monthly fees.

O2 Speed to Refresh is open to O2 Pay Monthly customers who have been with the carrier for at least three months.

Dubbed O2 Speed to Refresh, the new deal gives existing customers 25 percent off the cost of buying out the remainder of their contract if they upgrade to an O2 Refresh plan.

O2 Refresh is part of a growing trend of offering subscribers a clear distinction between their cellular service and the cost of payments towards the value of their handset. The plans mean customers' monthly bills are reduced after they've finished paying off their phone, and they can pay the full cost of the device up-front in exchange for lower fees.

O2 Speed to Refresh is open to O2 Pay Monthly customers who have been with the carrier for at least three months.
