Sony's next 'Compact' could launch as Xperia A2 in Japan

Xperia A2

Around a month ago we got the first hint of an updated Sony "Compact" smartphone heading to the Japanese market, as a handset codenamed "Atlair" passed through the FCC. And now we're seeing more on the physical form of the handset, which might launch on local carrier Docomo as the "Sony Xperia A2." Japanese blog ATRPG has published images from a Japanese brochure showing the Xperia A2 name alongside a device that looks very similar to the existing Xperia Z1 Compact.

The phone comes in black, white, lavender and orange colors, with the Japanese carrier's branding visible at the top of the front face. The blog purports to have a partial spec sheet for the phone, which it says packs a 4.3-inch 720p display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage. There's also a suggestion it may carry a Snapdragon 800 processor instead of the faster 801 chip used in the Xperia Z2. All of which points to the A2 being a tweaked version of the Xperia Z1 Compact (or Z1 f, was it's known in Japan), rather than a true Xperia Z2 Compact. That's not too surprising given that the Z1 Compact is barely three months old at this point.
