Apps of the Week: Alpha Zero, Bloom.fm, Zoodles and more!

Another wonderful roundup of apps from the writers at Android Central

Another week is in the books, and that means it's time for the latest edition of our Apps of the Week post. We round up a single app picked by each of the writers here at Android Central and put them on display every Saturday afternoon. The apps we pick out never have to follow a theme or a certain purpose all that matters here is that we use the app and want to tell more people about the reasons why.

This week we have another great roundup of apps, including a new game, another music service and a great way to repurpose an old Android device for your kids. Read along with us and see how this week's picks stack up.

Simon Sage - Alpha Zero

Alpha Zero

Alpha Zero is a touch-friendly arcade-style space game where players have to navigate two gun turrets simultaneously to fend off waves of enemies coming from all sides. Levels are interspersed with story, and over time players can customize their ship with skins, weapons, and other upgrades. The graphics are absolutely great, while the gameplay is smooth and intuitive. In-app purchases are enabled, which stings for a premium title, but Ive found no difficulty advancing and playing as is. For a fast, fun shooter with a bit of an old-school vibe, try out Alpha Zero.

Richard Devine - Bloom.fm

Bloom.fm

I stumbled across yet another music streaming app this week in Bloom.fm. And I'm hooked. It's main delivery mechanism is based around radio style streams, though if you pay to subscribe then you can listen to full albums and 'borrow' tracks to listen to offline. I love the way it looks especially on my white Galaxy S5 and the music streams it has served up so far have been right to my tastes. And I haven't paid a penny.

As with all music providing apps region restrictions may apply, so I can't say for sure where outside the UK can use it. But if you can, give it a try. Some great music in there to listen to.

Phil Nickinson - Zoodles

Zoodles

It's been a couple years since we highlighted Zoodles in our app picks, and it's worth another mention now. If you've got an old Android device laying around that you'd like to turn into a data-less device for a youngster, Zoodles will help keep a little control over your budding nerd. You can set access to apps and features, choose how long the device can be used but do all this while providing a safe and fun space for the child to play in and explore. I'd use it for younger children, but that's up to the parent, of course. There's a lot going on in this app, and it's worth a look if you want to start your kid out but still keep some control.

Andrew Martonik - Adobe Photoshop Express

Adobe Photoshop Express

I'm not usually one to tweak the pictures I take with my phone, but Adobe Photoshop Express is a great tool to have on hand for those few times when you want to spruce up an image. It goes further than what you'll find in a stock gallery app or on Instagram, providing great subtle filters for a one-click effect or fine-tuning controls for crops, exposure, contrast and more.

The app is free if you just want to apply some simple filters and adjustments, but you can load up on all the tools for just over $3 not a bad price to clean up some of the best photos you take.

Jerry Hildenbrand - Perfectly Clear

perfectly clear

A lot of us just bought a new phone with a better camera, or got the Google camera update for our phones and are loving all the features. But none of that changes the fact that sometimes, no matter how hard we try, some of our pictures are going to look like crap even ones we want to keep because we'll never have that moment again. Good thing there are apps to help!

Perfectly Clear is the best app on Android for automagically "fixing" your pictures. Good pictures will look great when ran through their software, and poor pictures will often become acceptable. Besides the amazing auto-correction, there are a slew of settings you can tweak should you want to try your own changes. A big update this week brings a noise removal tool that works as good as the rest of the app swimmingly. The app is three bucks, but that one time when you can salvage a picture by running it through makes it priceless.
